PUEBLO, Colo. (May 24, 2016) – After nearly 10 years since their first contribution to Colorado State University-Pueblo to reinstate the football program, the Friends of Football (FOF) have come together to provide improvements for all 22 Pack Athletics programs.
Currently under construction at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl are a 10,000-square-foot weight room, expansion of the athletic training room in the ThunderBowl Fieldhouse, locker additions in the Pack football locker room, upgrades to the women's track and field locker room and new turf for the ThunderBowl field.
The majority of the project is privately funded with the cost around $3,300,000. More than 83 donors, both individuals and businesses, have committed monetary or in-kind donations.
"Our student-athletes and coaches deserve the best facilities in the country and FOF is committed to make that happen," said Friends of Football member Dan DeRose.
The new weight room will more than double the space of the old area and will be utilized by all 600-plus student-athletes and coaches. The expansion will feature brand new equipment, which includes a large indoor turf area for speed and agility training. The weight room will include additional power racks and dumbbell benches, new Olympic lifting bars and bumpers, dumbbells, glute/ham benches and Keiser squat machines.
The roof of the new weight room will feature an observation deck to provide opportunities for special events and pre-game hospitality.
"With greater space, new and expanded equipment availability and a large indoor speed and agility training area, this new facility will allow us to do a better job providing strength and conditioning services to our student-athletes," said Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Allen Hedrick. "The other benefit will be in recruiting as we will now have one of the best strength and conditioning facilities at the Division II level."
The space where the old weight room was located will be utilized for expansion of the athletic training room and Pack football locker room.
The athletic training room will be expanded to 2,700 square feet and will feature a 12-seat cold plunge, an underwater rehab treadmill and nine new taping and treatment tables.
"We are excited for more space and expanded resources to get Pack student-athletes back to the field faster," said Nick Horman, CSU-Pueblo head athletic trainer for football. "The underwater treadmill places us with the top tier athletic training programs in NCAA Division II. It will allow us to do more with rehab to take our athletic programs to the next level."
The Pack locker room will add 45 lockers to house all of the five-time defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football student-athletes.
New turf, Power Blade Pro by Shaw Sports Turf, will replace the original turf on the ThunderBowl field. The new turf is a monofilament synthetic turf system.
The target date for the new turf is June 1, or before Pack football team camps begin later in the month of June. The updated training room remodel and locker room expansion is expected to be complete before the Pack football athletes report for fall camp, Aug. 10. The new weight room is expected to be completed before the ThunderWolves' home opener against West Texas A&M University, Sept. 10.
