Pueblo, Colo. (March 2, 2016) - Colorado State University-Pueblo's Alyssa Evans (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jacob Mitchell (Jr., Portland, Ore.) have been named Pack Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by Mobile Record Shredders.
Evans from the Track and Field team, will make her second consecutive championships appearance after qualifying for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in 2015. She will run the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash March 11 at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas.
She is seeded 10th of 17 runners with a time of 54.89, which was a winning effort at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Saturday.
Mitchell of the Pack wrestling squad avenged his only loss of the season (14-1) in the title match of the NCAA Division II Super Region Four Championships in Gunnison, Colo. Saturday.
Mitchell defeated Joseph Fagiano of California Baptist University, who was victorious over him at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships Jan. 31.
Mitchell, ranked No. 8 nationally, and Fagiano ranked fourth, battled to a 1-1 tie through three periods and neither wrestler scored in the sudden victory period. The CSU-Pueblo grappler started on top in the next period and was able to turn Fagiano for a four-point nearfall, which proved to be the difference in the 7-3 victory.
Mitchell returns to the Division II Championships after missing last season due to his transfer to CSU-Pueblo. He will earn one of the top four seeds in the 16-wrestler bracket at nationals. He was the 2014 national runner-up.
CSU-Pueblo will have three representatives at the Championships. Along with Mitchell, Sophomore JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) and Junior Tarrence Williams (Portland, Ore.) will seek to bring individual titles back to CSU-Pueblo.
The NCAA Division II Indoor Championships are at the Robert W. Plaster Center on Pittsburg State University’s campus. The preliminaries are set for a 5:05 p.m. start time.
