Griffin, Shrom receive RMAC Scholar-Athlete Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ( – June 11, 2014) — Colorado State University-Pueblo stand-out student-athletes Kacy Griffin (San Antonio, Texas) and Saul Shrom (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) were selected as the Pack’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Scholar Athletes for the 2013-14 academic year, it was announced by conference officials, Wednesday.

The honor is the top overall award bestowed by the conference and goes to only one male and one female student-athlete at each of the 14 member institutions.  To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.30 or higher, be of good character and have competed at their institution for at least two seasons. 

Griffin, who completed her volleyball eligibility and her bachelor’s degree in business management in December, 2013, finished with a perfect 4.00 GPA.  She was named as a First Team Capital One Academic All-American as selected by CoSIDA and was the 2013 RMAC Academic Volleyball Player of the Year.  The Pack’s starting setter for each of the past three years, Griffin also received CSU-Pueblo’s Jesse Banks Award, given annually to the athletic department’s top female student-athlete.

Shrom, who also recently was named as a First Team Capital One Academic All-American for his play on the tennis court and in the classroom, finished his tennis and academic career with a 3.97 GPA.  He was just one of three NCAA Division II men’s tennis players nationwide to be selected to the 15-man First Team for at-large sports and was also the RMAC’s Summit Award Winner for having the highest GPA of any student-athlete at the conference championship tournament.  He played in the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles position for the ThunderWolves throughout the year and was ranked as high as 14th in the ITA South Central individual singles rankings this year. 

He was the 2013-14 “Spank” Blasing Award Winner, given to CSU-Pueblo’s top male student-athlete.
