TACOMA, Wash. - Former CSU-Pueblo pitcher Joey Newby has been called up to the Tacoma Raniers, the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
Newby, 27, has been playing minor league ball since 2004, when he was a member of the Oakland Athletics organization. After not playing in 2008 within a Major League organization, Newby was signed by the Mariners this season, and has quickly climbed through the system from AA West Tennessee to Tacoma.
As of June 30, in 17 appearances this season, Newby has thrown 29 innings, boasting an ERA of 2.79.
Newby becomes just the third former CSU-Pueblo baseball standout to reach AAA, joining Judd Songster (Colorado Rockies/Colorado Springs Sky Sox) and Mike Massaro (Oakland Athletics/Sacramento RiverCats). No ThunderWolves have ever made it to the Major Leagues.
