Extra-inning battle doesn't break for ThunderWolves.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - May 14, 2011) - Facing elimination at RMAC Tournament, CSU-Pueblo got itself wrapped up in a back-and-forth slugfest with New Mexico Highlands Saturday, falling in extra innings to the Cowboys 9-8 on a walk-off base hit.
CSU-Pueblo seemed like it had executed the big hit needed to secure the win in the sixth inning, when a three-run double by Justin Cooper (Sr., Pullman, Wash.) helped the Pack jump out to a 6-2 lead, seemingly opening up the contest.
But just as quickly, the Cowboys made up the four-run gap. After getting within two on a pair of RBI singles, then adding the other two on double steals with runners on first and third. Both times, the runner from third base scored, leaving the game tied at 6-6 after six complete.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, Highlands' Eric Maupin doubled home two runs to give the Cowboys an 8-6 lead, pressuring the Pack to tie the game in the top of the 9th or go home.
With two out and a runner on base, Beau Stevens (Sr., Westminster, Colo.) delivered the biggest hit of the season, absolutely hammering a home run over the rightfield fence to tie the game at 8-8.
The game would drag to the 11th inning, when a Scott Fackrell single off of Nick Cervantes (Jr., Placentia, Calif.) with a runner on third base lifted the Cowboys to the win, ending the Pack's season.
With the loss, CSU-Pueblo was knocked out of the double-elimination tournament, its season ending with a 28-25 record.
