PUEBLO, Colo. (February 19, 2017) – In the last two games of their season opening homestand, Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball struggled to get going Sunday, losing game one of their doubleheader 10-1 to Regis University and dropping game two to Adams State University 9-2.
After stumbling in both seven inning games Sunday, the Pack slipped to 4-6 over their season-opening 10-game homestand. Regis improved to 3-3 and Adams State now stands 4-7.
Derron Davis (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) slugged two hits in two trips against the Rangers. Davis belted a RBI double to bring in the Pack's only run of game vs. Regis. He also went 1-for-3 in the Pack's showdown with the Grizzlies.
Senior Zach Visinoni (Paradise, Calif.) closed out game one with two scoreless innings. Visinoni struck out two batters and did not allow a base runner.
Zach Hoffman (Jr., South Jordan, Utah) had two hits and scored a run in game two. Hoffman also made his debut on the mound for the Pack against the Grizzlies throwing the final 3.1 innings of the game and allowing two runs. He struck out two.
Sunday's two games mirrored each other through the first four innings. Both Regis and Adams State led 7-0 after four frames with each team scoring one run in both the first and fourth, three runs in the second, and two in the fourth.
The Rangers scored three times in the fifth, while the Grizzlies scored twice. CSU-Pueblo would get on the board in the fifth inning of each game. The ThunderWolves also added a run in the sixth against the Grizzlies when Ambrose Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) drove in Hoffman with a single.
Tanner Fuhrmann (Jr., Flagstaff, Ariz.) scored the Pack's only run against the Rangers on Davis' double. The Pack got on the board against Adams State when Gilbert Sauceda (So., Indio, Calif.) reached base with Pack's second hit of the game. Sauceda scored on a Jorge Duarte (Jr., San Luis, Ariz.) groundout.
Neither Pack starter survived the second inning Sunday. In game one, Kyle Peeler (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) took the loss to drop to 0-3. Danny Honorof (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) left his first start with the loss in game two. Regis' Noah Gotsis won game one, while Josh Keaton earned the victory in game two for the Grizzlies.
The ThunderWolves will hit the road for the first time in 2017 when they face Lubbock Christian University in a four game series beginning Friday Feb. 24, 2017 at 2 p.m. The Pack and the Chaps will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. before concluding their four-game set Sunday at 12 p.m.
