PUEBLO, Colo. (March 12, 2017) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball was forced to settle for yet another series split Sunday when they dropped their series finale to Colorado School of Mines 9-5 at Rawlings Field.
Sundays have not been kind to the Pack. They have dropped their last six games on Sunday, with chances to win each of their last three series. CSU-Pueblo now has a 10-12 record on the season, while the Orediggers improved to 8-7. Both teams have a 4-4 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games.
David Gunther (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) extended his hot streak. The second baseman posted his second three-hit game of the series with a 3-for-3 day at the plate complete with a walk. He also scored twice and drove in a run. Gunther has raised his average to .327.
Ambrose Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) continues to be a run producing machine for the Pack. The Pack's catcher plated three runs. Romero now leads the RMAC with 25 RBIs. He had seven RBIs in the series.
Brandon Castaneda (Sr., Azusa, Calif.) went 2-for- 5 with a triple. He also scored a run.
Zach Hoffman (Jr., South Jordan, Utah) picked up another two hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run. Hoffman has two hits in three of the four games in the series.
Making his first start for the Pack, Josh Nuernberg (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) went six innings, giving up sixth hits and six runs. He also struck out six batters. Nuernberg's record evened up at 2-2 with the loss. Walter Pennington got the win for the Orediggers with five innings of relief.
Nuernberg kept the Orediggers scoreless in the first inning for the first time in the series. This allowed the Pack to take an early edge. In the bottom of the first, Hoffman scored on a Romero single to put the Pack up 1-0.
After the Orediggers knotted it up in their half of the second, the Pack struck for two in the bottom half. Derron Davis (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) led off the inning with a single. After consecutive outs advanced Davis to third, Gunther knocked in the run with a single. Gunther would eventually cross the plate on a Romero walk with the bases loaded to put the Pack up3-1.
The Pack answered a Mines run in the third with one of their own in the fourth. Gunther walked and came home on a Romero groundout.
CSU-Pueblo's final run came in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Devery (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) brought in Castaneda with a RBI groundout, after Castaneda led off the frame with a triple.
Nuernberg looked to be in good shape until the fifth inning when the Oregiggers hit a three-run home run to take a 5-4 lead. They would add one more in each of the last four inning to close out the series with a 9-5 win.
After playing 18 of their first 22 games at home, the Pack will hit the road for the next two weeks with trips to New Mexico Highlands University and rival Colorado Mesa University. They will return to Rawlings Field April 7 when they play Adams State University.
