LAKEWOOD, Colo. (April 15, 2017) – Colorado State University – Pueblo Baseball caught fire at the plate Saturday, knocking off Colorado Christian University 12-9 in their series finale at All-Star Park.
The Pack's victory broke a tie between the ThunderWolves and Cougars in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. CSU-Pueblo now stands 17-21 with an 11-13 record in conference play. Colorado Christian University dropped to 16-22 (10-14 RMAC). The ThunderWolves now lead the Cougars by one-game for the final spot in the RMAC Tournament.
Chris Devery (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) belted his first home run in a Pack uniform. Devery finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. The Pack's third baseman also drew two walks.
Derron Davis (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) drove in a team-high three runs. Davis reach base four times, going 2-for-2 and receiving two free passes. He slugged a double a scored a run.
Ambrose Romero (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) posted a 3-for-5 day at the dish. Romero knocked in a pair of runs and scored a run. The Pack's catcher also slugged his first triple of the season.
Brandon Castaneda (Sr., Azusa, Calif.) also mustered a three-hit game, going 3-for-6. Castaneda scored twice.
Senior Justin Willman (Falcon, Colo.) plated two runs to triple his career RBI total. The two RBIs marked a career-high for Willman who had previously driven in one run in his tenure with the Pack. Gilbert Sauceda(So., Indio, Calif.) scored twice for the Pack.
Zach Hoffman (Jr., South Jordan, Utah) went 2-for-6 with a run scored and a RBI. He also stole two more bases. Hoffman also started the game on the mound and earned the win to improve to 1-2 on the season. He struck out five batters in 5.1 innings of work.
The Pack pounced on the Cougars early with four runs in the top of the first inning. Devery drove in the game's first run with walk that brought in Jake Boyd (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah.). Romero followed with a two-run single. Devery would score on a Davis sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
After the Cougars scored two in their half of the first, the Pack put up a two-spot in the third. Devery smacked a solo shot to lead off the inning. Davis delivered with a RBI double that scored Romero to make it 6-2.
In the fourth inning, the Pack erupted for five runs to take an 11-3 lead. They would add one more in sixth to make it 12-4.
The Cougars would fight back with one in the fifth. They added four more runs in the sixth to cut the Pack's advantage to 12-9.
Colton Follet (Jr., Simi Valley, Calif.) would shut the door on the Cougars. Follett retired the last six Colorado Christian batters in order to earn his third save of the season. He struckout two Cougars without allowing a base runner.
The Pack showcased their patience at the plate, earning eight walks. CSU-Pueblo pitchers only issued two free passes.
The ThunderWolves will return to Rawlings Field for its final homestand of the season. CSU-Pueblo will kick off its eight-game homestand Friday April 21, when they face Regis University at 6 p.m.
