PUEBLO, Colo. (February 1, 2018) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Baseball will start its historic 25th season since the program restarted in 1993 when the Pack hosts West Texas A&M Friday at 1p.m. at Rawlings Field. The Pack's three-game weekend series continues Saturday when the Pack and Buffaloes toe the rubber at 3 p.m. The ThunderWolves wrap up their first weekend of the season with a home non-conference battle with Adams State University Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Pack's games Friday and Sunday will be the first of nine to air live on Rev 89.5 and the Rev app. CSU-Pueblo's student station was announced as the official broadcast partner of Pack Baseball Thursday.
Stan Sanchez returns to the Pack's bench for his 25th season. Over his first 24 years, Sanchez has a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record 807 career wins. He has a career 60.5 winning percentage in 24 seasons at CSU-Pueblo. Sanchez's 807 career wins ranks 21st all-time at the NCAA D-II level.
The ThunderWolves will look to build on their fourth place RMAC finish in 2017. CSU-Pueblo has had a winning record in conference play in 21 of their last 24 seasons. With a 23-26 record in 2017, the Pack posted just their fifth losing season since the program restart. They will look for their 20th winning season of the Stan Sanchez era in 2018.
Pack seniors Chris Devery (Saugus, Calif.) and Zach Hoffman (South Jordan, Utah) were both named Preseason All-RMAC. The ThunderWolves were picked to finish in a tie for fourth in this seasons' Preseason RMAC release.
Devery received Preseason All-RMAC as an infielder. The Pack's third baseman posted a .478 on-base percentage as a junior, fourth-best in the RMAC. Hoffman led the conference with seven triples and ranked third in the RMAC with 16 stolen bases.
In addition to Devery and Hoffman, three more Pack starters from last season return. Jorge Duarte (Sr., San Luis, Ariz.), Ambrose Romero (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.), Gilbert Sauceda (Jr., Indio, Calif.) are all back for the Pack. Duarte hit .304 with two home runs and 25 RBIs. Romero hit .358 and was tied for the team-lead with 39 RBIs.
Sauceda led the Pack with 40 walks. His .467 obp placed him a tie for sixth in the RMAC.
In total, 22 newcomers have joined the Pack's roster. Among these new faces is Chris Douglas (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) who will start Friday's season opener for the Pack. Douglas posted a 10-5 record over the last two seasons at Phoenix College. He had 3.93 ERA and 59 strikeouts last season.
Jordyn Compehos (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) returns for the Pack after missing last season. He hit .263 as a junior in 2016.
Newcomers, Talon Schaller (Jr., Lakewood, Colo.) and Billy Reyes (Jr., Yucaipa, Calif.) are expected to enter the Pack's starting lineup right away. Schaller slugged 17 home runs last season for Dodge City Community College. Reyes hit .349 in two seasons at San Bernardino City College.
Friday's season opener starts a 10-game season opening homestand for the Pack. They went 15-12 at Rawlings Field in 2017.
