Pack retains region's top ranking
ThunderWolves still on fast track for home field advantage through the national semifinals.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (GoThunderWolves.com - Oct. 31, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo continued to be ranked at the top of the NCAA Division II Super Regional rankings, the NCAA announced Monday.
CSU-Pueblo, a member of Super Region 3, one of four "super regions" in Division II that includes schools from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), continued to be the super region's lone undefeated team after last week's 37-0 win over New Mexico Highlands.
CSU-Pueblo continues to be the favorite to earn a first-round bye and home field advantage through the national semifinals, which would give it as many as three home playoff games. The ThunderWolves' status as the region's top-ranked team suggests that if it were to win the final two games of the regular season, it would retain the top spot and earn a first-round bye in the national playoffs, hosting a playoff game Nov. 26. Similar to the NFL playoffs, in which six teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs with the top two teams getting first-round byes, each super region also qualifies six teams to the playoffs. The region's third and fourth seeds will host a first-round playoff game Nov. 19.
The ThunderWolves were joined in the rankings by conference mate, Nebraska-Kearney, which weighed in at second in the super region with a 8-1 record, its lone loss coming to CSU-Pueblo. The rankings also suggest that the Lopers would be in line for a first-round bye if it were to win out.
The NCAA Super Region rankings trump all other national rankings (i.e.: AFCA and D2Football.com) in determining playoff position and qualification. CSU-Pueblo was ranked 4th in the nation in Division II's major coaches' poll, the American Football Coaches' Association poll, released Monday.
In anticipation of a potential home playoff game, the CSU-Pueblo Department of Athletics has made ticket purchase information available at http://www.gothunderwolves.com/athletics/tickets/playoffs.
