UPDATE: CSU-Pueblo mourns the loss of former Pack football player Ronell McNeal Jr.

PUEBLO, Colo. (December 7, 2016) - Colorado State University-Pueblo Athletics was saddened by the news that former Pack Football student-athlete, Ronell McNeal Jr., had passed away Monday, Dec. 6.

"Ronell was a great member of the ThunderWolves with an amazing spirit and heart," said CSU-Pueblo Head Football Coach John Wristen. "It's a tragic loss not only to his family and friends, but our Pack family and all his former teammates. I'm sorry to see him pass before his time."

McNeal graduated from CSU-Pueblo in August 2016 with a bachelor's degree in mass communications and an emphasis in electronic media.

He played for the ThunderWolves from 2011-15 and was a member of the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship team. A reserve defensive back and special teams player, McNeal played in 35 games in his career and totaled 26 tackles. His most productive season came in 2015 as a senior where he played in all 14 games and compiled 17 tackles (14 solo), a tackle for loss and two breakups. He recorded his only career interception at New Mexico Highlands University (Nov. 14) and posted a career-high four tackles against the Cowboys.

From Aurora, Colorado, McNeal was a standout student-athlete at Prairie View High School in Henderson, Colo. He earned all-conference honorable mention in football and was a multiple threat player, as he rushed for more than 500 yards, logged more than 800 receiving yards, passed for more than 1,100 yards and averaged four tackles per game as a defensive back. He was named his team's MVP and team captain in football, as well as basketball, where he was a first-team all-conference selection. McNeal was named a national Academic Player of the Month in March 2008 and was an honor roll and Academic All-Conference selection at Prairie View.
