Former Air Force Academy assistant coach, Tom Miller, was hired in
September as assistant head coach and defensive line coach.
Miller had been a key assistant to former USAFA head football
coach, Fisher DeBerry, for 24 years. Prior to DeBerry's retirement
following the 2005 season, Miller was the special teams coordinator
for the Falcons. He had also served in other capacities with the
Falcons, including as coach of strong safeties, outside
linebackers, and as defensive line coach, where he coached perhaps
the most decorated football alum the university had ever had,
former NFL player and Outland Trophy recipient, Chad Hennings.
While on the Falcons' staff, Miller was on the coaching staff for
14 bowl games. He was also once nominated for Assistant Coach of
the Year.
Miller is a 1969 graduate of Cortland State where he earned his
bachelor's degree in physical education. He later earned a master's
in physical education in 1972 from Bridgeport. While at Cortland
State, Miller lettered in football three years. He also lettered
one year in track.
Miller began his coaching career at Glens Falls High School in
1969, helping the team to an 8-2 record. In 1970, he moved to
Ravena High School and helped the team to a 17-2 mark. Miller's
collegiate career began at Bridgeport in 1972 when he served as a
defensive line and offensive line coach. In 1974, he went to
Davidson College where he coached until 1982. While at Davidson,
Miller coached the offensive line, defensive ends and defensive
line. Miller coached at The Citadel in 1982 for one year before
moving to Dartmouth.
At the Air Force Academy, Miller's teams had been among the
nation's best at blocking kicks. In 1997, the Falcons set a school
record with 11 blocked kicks. The team blocked 59 kicks in the
1990s, the second- most in the nation.
He and his wife, Pat, have two sons, Bo and Michael, and one
daughter, Emily.
