Second half rally helps Pack roll past Skyhawks
Raucous comeback fuels much-needed win for Pack.
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 10, 2012) - In a game that was dull and out of favor for the first 30 minutes of the game turned into quite the celebration for the CSU-Pueblo men's basketball team. An and-one layup by Ty Trahern (Sr., Kit Carson, Colo.) with 54 seconds capped off a thrilling second half rally as the Pack went on to defeat Fort Lewis 77-73 Friday night.
The Pack trailed by 15 with 9:42 remaining as it looked like they would be defeated by the Skyhawks in dismal fashion before a 20-1 run erased the large deficit and reversed the favor of the game. The run also helped the Pack get their first lead of the game late in that half.
Fort Lewis slightly recovered from the devastating run, tying the game at 68-68 with 1:14 left before Trahern's and-one clinched the game for the ThunderWolves.
Four players scored in double-digits for the Pack led by a 21-point effort from Andre Martin (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) and a 20-point effort from Trahern. Bryse Velasquez (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 14 points and Kevin Coates (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) chipped in 10 points in the effort.
Martin also recorded a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds.
Fort Lewis shot the ball well finishing the game going 47 percent from the field. Matt Billups led the Skyhawks as he scored a team-high 19 points. Two other Skyhawks scored in double-digits led by 12 points from Matt Morris and 11 points from Mike Matthews.
The win was made all the larger by the fact that it lifted the ThunderWolves to 8-9 in conference play, lifting the Pack to the cusp of the conference's top-eight, the threshold needed to qualify for the RMAC playoffs.
CSU-Pueblo plays host to Adams State Saturday with a tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
