DENVER, Colo. (January 28, 2017) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team recorded a flurry of 3-pointers in the second half to run away from Regis University and post an 87-81 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road victory.
The ThunderWolves improved the 14-6 overall and 12-3 in RMAC play after seven 3-pointers in the second half, which included five from sophomore Gavin Liggett (Limon, Colo.). Overall the Pack went 10-for-18 (55.6%) from long range and were 25-of-51 (49%) from the field. CSU-Pueblo also hit on 27-of-33 (81.8%) from the free throw line.
The Rangers (13-7, 7-7 RMAC) hit on 49.1 percent of their shots from the field, hit 11 3-pointers, but posted a 64.3 percentage from the charity stripe.
All five Pack starters scored in double figures. Liggett finished with 18 on a 6-of-9 (66.7%) shooting performance from long range. Junior guard Will Newman (Hawthorne, Calif.) posted 21 points, six rebounds and six assists to keep the ThunderWolves rolling. He went 11-of-14 from the line.
Guard Rico Spikes (Sr., Merriville, Ind.) recorded 15 points, four rebounds and four assists on 5-of-10 (50%) shooting from the field. Both junior Mark Williams (Chino Hills, Calif.) and senior Nelson Kahler (Noosa Heads, Australia) totaled 12 points. Williams added six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Kahler totaled two blocks and shot 5-for-7 (71.4%) from the field.
The ThunderWolves trailed 39-36 at the half and trailed by a possession for the first five minutes of the second frame. The road team then posted an 11-2 run to open a 57-49 lead with 13:08 showing on the game clock. The lead was double-digits for the first time at 62-51 just a minute later after another Liggett 3-pointer.
The sophomore's sixth 3-pointer of the contest came with 9:48 left and handed the Pack their largest lead of the night at 71-57.
The lead was just four at 79-75 with 2:44 remaining, but the Pack were able to close the contest and win by a six-point margin.
Next is a home weekend Feb. 3-4 against Adams State University and No. 16 Fort Lewis College. Friday night is a White Out and fans are encouraged to wear white to the game. Saturday is Take a Kid to the Game Night and features the Denver Nuggets Super Mascot Rocky. Both contests are set for 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game is slated to appear on Comcast CET (105/900 HD).
