CHANDLER, Ariz. (April 24, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's golf team finished the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in third at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Arizona. Senior Neil Tillman (Arvada, Colo.) carded a 65 Tuesday to finish tied for fifth.
The ThunderWolves shot 276-284-286--846 to go six-under for the Championships. The Pack were tied for the lead entering the final round, but it would be No. 32 Colorado School of Mines that would take the title at 13-under. Regis University was second at -12. CSU-Pueblo bested No. 12 University of Colorado Colorado Springs by three strokes. The ThunderWolves played the Par 5's 12-under to tie for the second best score in the field. The team totaled 181 pars to lead the eight teams. The Pack also carded two eagles to tie for the tournament lead.
The Pack were ranked eighth in the latest NCAA South Central Region rankings, as the top 10 from each of the eight regions advance to the regional championship. The selections for the regional championships will be announced Friday.
Tillman totaled 11 pars, five birdies, an eagle on the 538-yard, Par 5 15th, with just one bogey to post a six-under 65. The effort comes after shooting a six-over 77 Monday and going +6 in the final three holes of the round. He shot 67-77-65--209 for the tournament to sit four-under and tie for fifth. He led the team with 11 birdies and guided the Pack on the Par 4's with a tournament score of -1. He tied for the team lead by playing the Par 5's four-under.
Freshman Nathan McCann (Lurgan, Armagh, Ireland) couldn't quite score like he did Monday, as he posted a 75 in the final round to finish two-under. He shot 71-64-75--210 to finish three-under for the tournament. He led the squad with 39 pars and tied for the second best effort among all players on Par 3's at one-under.
The final three players all tied for 21st at six-over. Junior Roy Carlsen (Arvada, Colo.) shot a consistent 75-72-72--219. He totaled three birdies in the final round and finished with eight. He tied for the Pack-low on Par 5's at four-under.
Freshman Sam Barthram (Weybridge, Surrey, UK) went 71-74-74--219 and scored for the team in every round in his first championship. He had the second most pars on the team with 37 and totaled eight birdies for the tournament.
Junior Fraser Hughes (Newton Stewart, Scotland) struggled on the final day and shot a 78, as he went 67-74-78 for his 219. He also finished with eight birdies in his first RMAC Championship.
