COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 23, 2018) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Men's Golf was predicted to finish fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coaches Poll released Wednesday.
However, the Pack finished just two points out of third place in the RMAC Coaches Preseason poll. The ThunderWolves finished third in the RMAC Tournament Championships in 2018. They shared the lead after the second round of the three round competition, before it was won by Colorado School of Mines, who was picked to win the conference in 2018-19 according to the preseason poll.
CSU-Pueblo also won the 2017 RMAC Fall Preview earlier in the season. This was one of three first place finishes for the Pack a year ago.
The Pack brings a deep roster of 10 student-athletes into the 2018-19 season. They lost just one student-athlete to graduation, Neil Tillman.
Eight golfers return for the Pack including Fraser Hughes (Sr., Newton Stewart, Scotland) , who was named First Team All-RMAC last season. Hughes ranked second on the Pack with a 73.0 stroke average. He shared first place in the 2017 Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational. Hughes earned a RMAC Golfer of the Week Award Sept. 7.
Nathan McCann (So., Lurgan, Armagh, Ireland) won both of the Pack's home tournaments in his freshman campaign. McCann led the pack with a 72.8 stroke average. Like Hughes, he also earned a RMAC Golfer of the Week Award. He led the Pack with a seventh place finish at the RMAC Championships.
Sam Barthram (So., Weybridge, Surrey, UK) and Roy Carlsen (Sr., Arvada, Colo.) each competed for the Pack in last year's RMAC Tournament and the Pack's second consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament. Barthram averaged 75.1 strokes per round as a freshman.
One of four seniors on the roster, Carlsen averaged a career-best 74.3 stroke average last season. He is joined by fellow seniors Hughes, Taylor Rodriguez (Pueblo, Colo.) and Austin Shanks (Wichita, Kan.).
Matthew McCulloch (Jr., Stranraer, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, Uk) transfers to the Pack from D-I Oakland University. He is joined by fellow UK newcomer Sanjay Nithiyalingham (Fr., Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, UK). Nithiyalingham won the 2017 Men's Burghley Park Club Championship by 11 strokes.
Juniors, Austin Burgess (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Chase Federico (Pueblo, Colo.) will both try to crack the Pack's five-man rotation for tournaments this season. Burgess finished 13th at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course. Federico finished 12th at the Southern Colorado Masters at the pueblo Country Club.
The Pack will start their season Sept. 3-4 with the 2018 Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational, which will be held at Walking Stick.
