PUEBLO, Colo. (March 4, 2017) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Men's Lacrosse had its 2017 home opener spoiled by Adams State University as the Pack dropped a 12-9 final to the Grizzlies Saturday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Lacrosse Stadium.
The Pack started their third season the way they ended their second with a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss to the Grizzlies. However, with nine goals in Saturday's season opener the Pack scored more times Saturday than they did in two meetings with Adams State in 2016.
Cody Bolen (Jr., Castle Rock, Colo.) scored the Pack's first goal of the season almost 10 minutes into the game on a cross-crease feed from Nick Matzek (Jr., Tustin, Calif.). Bolen finished with two goals and an assist.
Matzek picked up where he left in 2016. After setting a school-record with 33 points last year, Matzek picked up four points Saturday. He netted a goal and dished out three assists.
Bolen's first goal put the Pack on the board, as they trailed 2-1. Adams State added one more to make it 3-1 after one.
After another Adams State goal, Bolen returned the favor, finding Matzek who fired in a rocket shot to make it 4-2. Following another Adams strike, the Pack answered with a pair of goals. Taylor Davis (So., Littleton, Colo.) rifled in his first of two goals on an assist from Trevor Boice (So., Stuart, Fla.). Weston Bartgis (So., El Cajon, Calif.) followed with a man-up goal that brought the Pack back within one. The two teams traded goals again before halftime as Bolen found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity to make it 6-5 heading into halftime.
The Pack came out of the locker room on fire. Blake Foerster put away a feed from Matzek to tie the game at six. Caleb Johnson (Jr., Castel Rock, Colo.) won the ensuing faceoff and immediately found Foerster who launched in another goal. Foerster's two goals in four seconds gave the Pack a 7-6 lead.
Adams State reclaimed the lead with two more goals to jump back in front 8-7. Davis tied it up when he lit the lamp on a Devin Thrower (R-Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) pass to knot the game at eight. Bartgis followed an Adams State goal with his second of the afternoon to the tie the game at nine, but the Grizzlies would get one more before the end of the third to take a 10-9 lead into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Pack fired 10 shots at the net, but could not beat Connor Johnson. The Adams State netminder stopped 20 of the 29 shots he faced to give himself and the Grizzlies a 12-9 win. Nick Richards (Jr., Henderson, Nev.) made 14 saves on 26 shots, but suffered the loss for the Pack.
Johnson won 14 of the 22 faceoffs he took. A Preseason All-RMAC selection, Johnson also secured five ground balls and caused a turnover. Thrower also collected five ground balls. He forced two turnovers for CSU-Pueblo.
The Pack will look to even their record Tuesday when the face the University of Great Falls at 7 p.m. at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Lacrosse Stadium. The opening faceoff for Tuesday night's game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
