Pack stumbles in opener
The CSU-Pueblo men's soccer team saw its season opener spoiled by a physical Rockhurst team, ranked 15th nationally, on Sunday. The men dropped a 2-0 decision to the Hawks from Missouri.
An early goal in the 16th minute of the first half by Rockhurst proved to be all that was needed in this defensive contest. The score would remain 1-0 throughout much of the game as both teams battled for possession and field position. The Pack battled through most of the second half without allowing much of a scoring threat for the Hawks. Goalkeeper Chris Smith (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) did all he could to fend off the Hawks with three saves at the goal.
One more goal late in the second half provided the visiting team with the insurance needed to solidfy the win, and spoil the home and season opener for the Pack.
CSU-Pueblo will look to bounce back from the tough early season loss when it hosts Adams State, a startup program in its first season of competition, on Friday. Scheduled game time is 2 p.m.
