PUEBLO, Colo. (September 2, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team opened the season Friday picking up a 1-0 victory against Newman University at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Soccer Stadium.

Freshman Miles Sanchez (Bothell, Wash.) scored his first collegiate and only goal of the game in the 32nd minute, receiving a pass by Mackenzie Paquette (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) from midfield to a trailing Sanchez who dribbled the ball from the right sideline past the defender to the middle of the box and fired a missle past the reach of the Jets goalkeeper.

CSU-Pueblo controlled the ball from the opening kick as they quickly gained possession in Jets territory and firing its first shot on goal in the first moments of the game while earning a corner kick.

Dycus Kelly (So., Laramie, Wyo.) was active from the start as he, along with Sanchez led the Pack attack with a combined five shots at the net in the first half.

The first half set the tone of physical play on both ends that resulted in ten first half fouls, as the Pack held a 7-3 shots lead heading into halftime.

Midfielder Santiago Tinta (So., Quito-Ecuador) held his own in the middle throughout the game with good footwork and possession with the ball.

Tinta, Zach Davis (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.), and Aaron Strunk (Sr., Springfield, Mo.) each were instrumental in grounding the Jets late game rally.

Pack goalkeeper Erich Frey (R-So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) had somewhat of a relaxed evening at the net, making one save on just five shot attempts by the Jets.

CSU-Pueblo (1-0) returns to action Sunday at 12 p.m. when they welcome Lubbock Christian for a matinee matchup at the Art & Lorraine Gonzales Soccer Stadium.
