Men's tennis has mixed returns in Denver

The CSU-Pueblo men’s tennis team had mixed returns against some old RMAC foes, splitting a pair of matches against Metro State and Mesa State.

The men began the day by squeaking out a 5-4 victory over a shorthanded Metro State team.  The Roadrunners, last year’s RMAC champions, went into the match short a player, and the points that Metro defaulted proved instrumental in the Thunderwolves’ victory.

The Pack got off to a good start in doubles, and although the number one team of  Beau Fresquez (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Ricardo Oaxaca (Jr., Puebla, Mexico) lost, Andres Morales (So., Puebla, Mexico) partnered German newcomer Philipp Penkatzki (Sr., Bottrop, Germany) and got a victory at #2 doubles.  A default at #3 doubles gave the Pack an advantage going into singles play.

Although it could be said that the Pack relied a bit too much on default points, they picked up the win despite not faring as well in singles play.  Of note, collegiate rookie Elliot Silva (So., Neodesha, Kan.) earned his first career win at #5 singles.

Against Mesa State, the Pack had less luck.  Numbers 1 and 2 doubles took care of business, but singles play was again a let down.  It should be noted, however, that the men were missing three projected key players due to NCAA eligibility issues, and on another day, the results could have easily been much different.
