KEARNEY, Neb. (GoThunderWolves.com - Oct. 2, 2010) - Claiming wins in dramatic tie breaks against higher-ranked opponents, sophomore Anthony Breitenbach (So., Tigard, Ore.) is trying to claim an improbable championship at the ITA Central Regionals, being held in Kearney, Neb.
Breitenbach will square off against top-seeded Yair Banuelos in the ITA Central Regional semifinals Sunday morning.
Breitenbach has already caught lightning in a bottle in the upset department, taking down fifth-seeded Jacob Gerbrands from Mesa State by a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 score. He followed up that dramatic win with an even bigger one, disposing of Nebraska-Kearney's third-seeded star, Josh Raymond, 5-7, 7-6(4), 10-5.
He wasn't the only story for the ThunderWolves - Freshman Saul Shrom (Fr., Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada) bounced back from a loss to Banuelos in the opening match of the tournament to storm through the rest of the field, going 3-1 in the tourney and claiming the ITA Central Regional Consolation Championship. Through seven matches this season, Shrom is off to a blazing start, going 6-1 and proving to be a great pickup for the Pack.
Breitenbach also had his hand in a possible consolation championship in the doubles bracket, as he and partner Ivan Aragona (Jr., Sao Paolo, Brazil) made their way all the way to the consolation championship.
