Pack comes up short on home court
PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Apr. 8, 2011) - CSU-Pueblo's men's tennis squad couldn't get wins against nationally-ranked Western New Mexico and Mesa State this weekend, falling at home 9-0 and 6-3, respectively.
Facing a Western New Mexico squad ranked 34th in the nation and is the odds on favorite to sweep through the RMAC tournament this spring, CSU-Pueblo fell 9-0, though the match was much closer than the scoresheet indicated.
Nationally-ranked Emmanuel Mensah from Western New Mexico played nearly point to deuce with the Pack's number-one, Bruno Hurtado (So., Mexico City, Mexico), but fell 6-1, 6-1. Hurtado would rebound on Friday against Mesa State, besting the Mavs' Jaco Gerbrands 6-4, 6-3. He also won his doubles match against Mesa, as well, with partner Saul Shrom (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitopa, Canada) at two-doubles by an 8-2 score.
Another huge match for the Pack came in the three-doubles match, as Tom Chavez (So., Pueblo, Colo.) and Mateus Vasconcelos (Campo Grande, Brazil) fought Mesa State's Jonathan Casson and Isaac Brown to a dramatic 8-6 win.
CSU-Pueblo will, however, be on the road for the remainder of the season, heading to Grand Junction for a three-match pod next weekend.
