PUEBLO, Colo. (Sept. 18, 2017) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's tennis team posted a strong opening weekend to the fall tennis season at the CSU-Pueblo Duals, as they went 3-2.
The ThunderWolves started the weekend losing 5-4 to University of Texas-Permain Basin, but bounced back later in the day Friday with a 5-4 victory against University of Nebraska-Kearney. Last season, the Pack fell 8-1 to UNK and the Lopers were ranked No. 44 in the final Intercollegaite Tennis Association poll. Saturday was another 1-1 performance with a loss to Emporia State University 5-3 and 5-0 sweep of Colorado College. Sunday CSU-Pueblo wrapped the homestand with a 6-3 victory against Newman University, who ranked No. 48 in last year's final national poll.
Senior Steven Alcala (Pueblo, Colo.) was a perfect 6-0, which included a 4-0 record at No. 3 doubles with freshman Cade Boedeker (Keller, Texas). Alcala went in singles play with wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Boedeker finished the weekend 4-1 in doubles and earned a 3-1 record at No. 4 singles in his first collegiate competition.
Newcomers Thomas Pudney (Fr., Southend, United Kingdom) recorded a 4-0 record at No. 2 singles, while junior Ogulcan Deniz (Istanbul, Turkey) was 3-2 at No. 1 singles and posted a matching 3-2 mark in doubles. He was 2-2 at No. 1 with partner David Mould (Upminster Essex, United Kingdom) and also picked up a win at No. 2 doubles with junior James Ryan (London, England).
Next the ThunderWolves will enter in the Air Force Invitational, a singles and doubles tournament in Colorado Springs, Colorado Sept. 23-24.
