GREELEY, Colo. (January 21, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo tennis teams began the spring and championship portion of their season Saturday with a meeting at NCAA Division I University of Northern Colorado. The Pack men battled, but lost 4-3, while the women suffered an 7-0 setback.
The new ITA Rankings were released Jan. 17 and placed the ThunderWolves men's team No. 7 in the South Central Region.
CSU-Pueblo lost all their doubles bouts, but got three wins in singles play. Ranked No. 35 nationally, Thomas Pudney (Fr., Southend, United Kingdom) won at No. 1 singles by the score of 6-3, 0-6, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, James Ryan (Jr., London, England) won in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Finally, Rafael Abreu (So., San Paulo, Brazil) won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5.
The men were slated to play at Air Force Sunday, but it will be rescheduled. The ThunderWolves will break until hosting University of Colorado Club in an exhibition match Feb. 17. The Pack host UC Riverside Feb. 25 at 3:30 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Pueblo Tennis Center.
On the women's side, the Pack got closest to a win at No. 3 doubles with seniors Samantha Cachutt (Caracas, Miranda) and Kristin Jensen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) losing 6-4. All the singles results were in the favor of UNC in straight sets.
Next for the women is a Feb. 3 meeting at University of New Mexico at 10 a.m.
