ThunderWolves split weekend series at Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. (March 19, 2017) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team earned another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series split Sunday at Chadron State. The Pack picked up a 10-8 win in game one and fell 8-6 in the series finale at CSC Softball Field.

In the first inning of game one CSU-Pueblo made its presence known with four walks in through the first five hitters and a Chadron State error put the Pack up 2-0. Michaeal Burpee (So., C, Union City, Calif.) collected an RBI on a free pass with the bases juiced.

The Pack added a single run in the second on a RBI-single by Gabby Moreno (Fr., 3B, Scottsdale, Ariz.) and 3-0 Pack lead.

Chadron State took the lead in their next at bat scoring five runs on just three hits all with two outs in the inning to build a 5-3 advantage.

The teams exchanged single runs in the fourth. The Pack's run came via RBI-single off the bat of Moreno.

CSC pushed its lead to 8-4 in the fifth capitalizing on a pair of Pack miscues.

A scoreless sixth set the stage for the big scoring seventh for CSU-Pueblo.

In the Pack's final at bat Lexie Martindale (Sr., DP, Pueblo, Colo.) singled and walk issued to Burpee allowed for K'Lee Kent (Jr., P, Hobbs, NM) to step up and belt her first homerun of the season to get the Pack within one 8-7.

Two errors by the Eagles coupled with a 2-run single from Moreno and RBI-single from Martindale propelled the Pack past the home team.

Kent started in the circle for the Pack throwing 4.1 innings with eight runs allowed, one earned and three strikeouts.

Martindale silenced the Eagles' offense in going 2.2 innings giving up no runs and just two hits to pick up the win and improve her record to 9-5.

In the series finale a five run first inning by Chadron State was too much to overcome in the 8-6 defeat.

After a twenty-minute first inning CSU-Pueblo called upon the services of Martindale to control the CSC lineup.

The ThunderWolves capitalized on their first scoring chance in the third on a blooper hit in the infield by Burpee over the reach of the pitcher to score two runs.

Chadron added a single run in their half of the inning and extend the lead back to 6-2.

CSU-Pueblo cut the lead by two on a 2-run homerun hit by Vivian Ledesma (So., SS, Colton, Calif.), her first of the season.

In the fifth Burpee hit a solo shot with one out for her team leading eighth homer of the year and 6-5 CSC lead.

Trailing by three heading into the final inning the Pack put runners on base and Ledesma took advantage with a single to left field and earning her third RBI of the game.

With the go-ahead run at the plate and tying run in scoring position, CSC pitcher Megan Horn retired the ThunderWolves to earn the save in a 8-6 decision.

Moreno ended the weekend 7-for-12 (.583 avg.) at the plate with three walks, one homerun and five RBIs.

Martindale went 2-0 allowing four runs, two earned in 14.0 IP and scattered ten hits and seven strikeouts.

CSU-Pueblo (11-13, 8-8 RMAC) returns home Mar. 25-26 for a four game RMAC series against Regis beginning Saturday at the Rawlings Softball Complex.
