Indoor track and field begins season at CSM Alumni Classic


PUEBLO, Colo. (December 7, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's track and field teams will start the 2016-17 indoor season at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Classic, Dec. 8-9 at the Steinhauer Fieldhouse in Golden, Colorado.

Tuesday, the ThunderWolves men were pegged to finish fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Pack were headlined by Preseason All-RMAC selections, Dante Carter (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) and Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.). Both athletes redshirted last season when CSU-Pueblo finished sixth at the RMAC Indoor Championships.

Carter will run the 3000m event Friday. Other notables competing include, junior Ron Sweeten (Falcon, Colo.), who is entered into the triple jump where he finished fourth at last year's RMAC Championships. Sophomore Jacob Smith (Strasburg, Colo.) will compete in the heptathlon where he was seventh last season. Sophomore Shawn Horne (Camp Casey, South Korea) was seventh in last year's 200m dash, but will run the 400m Friday.

The women were selected to finish sixth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Pack were fourth last season, guided by a second-place finish in the pentathlon by Andrea Tuck (Sr., Canon City, Colo.). She was a 2016-17 Preseason All-RMAC selection.

Tuck will compete in the pentathlon Thursday and Friday. Other notables include senior Bailey Hughes (Bigfork, Mont.) running in the 3K where he finished fourth at the RMAC Indoor Championships. Senior Makenna Linn (Bennett, Colo.) is set to complete in the triple jump where she was fifth last season. Junior Catherine Tiona (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished sixth in the pole vault at last season's championships and will vault Friday. Junior Tatianna Clanton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was fourth last year in the 200m, but will sprint in the 60m Friday.

In addition to the returners, both squads will have a host of newcomers competing in their first indoor meet.

The event will be the last for the Pack before the holiday break. They resume competition Jan. 14 at The Shootout at Western State Colorado University.
