Men ranked No. 8 in national poll; ThunderWolves head to CU Invitational Feb. 2-3


PUEBLO, Colo. (February 2, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's track and field program ranks No. 8 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national poll, while both the men's and women's programs will compete at the CU Invitational in Boulder, Colorado Feb. 2-3. 

The national rankings are a computer based system based on national times and marks. 

Friday Events at the CU Invitational, hosted by University of Colorado, begin at 10:30 a.m., while Saturday gets underway at 11 a.m. Some of the top teams in the nation from both Division I and Division II will be competing in the meet, including Division I No. 11 Colorado and No. 13 Colorado State University and Division II No. 1 Colorado School of Mines on the men's side and No. 8 University of Colorado Colorado Springs and No. 9 Adams State University on the women's side. 

TEAMS: Adams State College, Air Force Academy, Azusa Pacific College, Cal State Fullerton, Chadron State College, Colorado Christian University, Colorado College, Colorado Mines University, Colorado Mesa University, CSU-Pueblo, Colorado State University, Johnson and Whales, Portland State University, South Dakota Mines College, Southern Colorado College, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, University of Northern Colorado, University of Wyoming, Western State College.

Two women will attempt to improve on their NCAA provisional marks in field events Friday, as senior Angelique Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.) has been entered in the pole vault and sophomore Lauren Fairchild (McKinney, Texas) will compete in the long jump. Urenda holds the school record in the pole vault and ranks 11th nationally with a vault of 3.70m. Fairchild sits 20th in Division II in the long jump with a mark of 5.71m. 

For the men Friday, senior Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.) is set to run in the mile. Both Williams (track) and Urenda (field) were named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week Tuesday.

The men on Saturday will be highlighted by the 4x400m relay team. The same foursome Shawn Horne (Jr., Camp Casey, South Korea), Thomas Staines (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.), Devundrick Walker (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) and Dueth Vassell (Sr., Denver, Colo.) return to the track one week after setting an NCAA Provisional time of 3:17.05 that ranks 20th in Division II. 

Walker and Staines will also race in the 800m run, as they own the sixth and 13th fastest times, respectfully, in Division II this season. Marcelo Laguera (Jr., Chihuahua, Mexico) has the 10th best mark in the 3000m run this season and will compete in the event Saturday.
