Men's 4x400m relay sets school record to lead Pack at CSU-Pueblo Early Bird Meet


PUEBLO, Colo. (March 17, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's track and field teams hosted the CSU-Pueblo Early Bird Meet Friday and Saturday to open the 2018 outdoor season. The men's 4x400m relay team was the highlight, as the squad set the school record and posted an NCAA time.

On the women's side, sophomore Lauren Fairchild (McKinney, Texas) recorded two event wins and totaled four top three finishes. She won the long jump with a leap of 5.69m, then ran to a time of 25.51 in the 200m dash to win the event. She was third in the 100m dash with a time of 12.35.

The foursome of Fairchild, Nicole Bouma (Kalispell, Mont.), senior Angelique Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.) and Kayana Casias (Pueblo, Colo.) clocked a time of 4:04.16 in the 4x400m relay to post a runner-up finish.

Freshman Yasmine Hernandez (Johnstown, Colo.) recorded a time of 58.30 in the 400m dash to finish first and earn a win in her first collegiate meet.

Senior Miriam Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) was runner-up in the 5000m run with a time of 17:38.54, which should convert to an NCAA provisional time, while sophomore Gillian Maness (Kalispell, Mont.) was fourth in the race after finishing in 18:05.88.

Urenda was second in the high jump with a best mark of 1.65m, which was just off an NCAA provisional mark.

The Pack went 2-3 in the shot put, as freshman Marie Gomez (Holly, Colo.) posted a throw of 12.04m and sophomore Jenna McKinley (Mosca, Colo.) hurled a throw of 11.66m.

Freshman Hailey Streff (Madison, S.D.) finsished fourth in the 800m run when she crossed the finish line in 2:25.89. In the 1500m run, Bouma posted a time of 4:52.63 to also finish fourth.

The men's 4x400m relay team established a new school record and posted an NCAA provisional time of 3:10.21. The group was made up of junior Shawn Horne (Camp Casey, South Korea), junior Devundrick Walker (Aurora, Colo.), senior Dueth Vassell (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Thomas Staines (Colorado Springs, Colo.). The previous record of 3:12.85 was established in 2016 with Horne, Walker and Vassell all in that group.

Sophomore Paul Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) won the 5000m run with at time of 14.50.38, which converted will be close to an NCAA time. Sophomore Alec Choury (Westminster, Colo.) was fourth with a time of 15:21.57.

Senior Ron Sweeten (Falcon, Colo.) recorded a leap of 6.80m in the long jump to finish second. He was also runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 14.48m

Junior Tevin Donnell (Fountain, Colo.) recorded a runner-up finish in the 200m dash with a time of 22.06. He was third in the 100m dash with a time of 10.92.

Freshman Nathan Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was fourth in the discus with a throw of 45.32m. Senior Tyler Van Oort (Rye, Colo) was fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.95m. Finally in field events, junior Jonathan Sanchez (Aurora, Colo.) was fourth in the javelin throw with a mark of 42.41m.

The ThunderWolves will take a week off before hosting the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing Meet March 30-31.
