PUEBLO, Colo. (April 6, 2018) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's track and field team is ranked No. 7 in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, the highest in program history during the outdoor season, and will join with the women's program April 7 at the CU Invitational in Boulder, Colorado.
The squads are coming off a successful home meet, the Spank Blasing Meet, last weekend were the teams combined for seven event victories and seven NCAA provisional times.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week, Thomas Staines (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) guided the Pack with a converted NCAA automatic time of 1:47.96 in the 800m run. He ranks first in Division II this season and sixth among all divisions.
He will run in the 1500m run Saturday, along with senior Derrick Williams (Columbia Falls, Mont.) and freshman Michael Duran (Pueblo, Colo.). Williams is coming off an NCAA provisional time in the 3000m steeplechase that has him ranked third in the division.
Junior Devundrick Walker (Aurora, Colo.) will run the 800m run where he established an NCAA provisional time last week that ranks 10th in Division II, while senior Dueth Vassell (Denver, Colo.) and junior Shawn Horne (Camp Casey, South Korea) are set to compete in the 400m dash.
Horne, Walker, Vassell and Staines are slated to run the 4x400m relay together for the third time this season. The first time the squad ran they established a provisional time that ranks second in NCAA Division II this season.
Junior Marcelo Laguera (Chihuahua, Mexico) and Paul Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) are set to compete in the 3000m run after both posting an NCAA provisional time in the 10,000m run last week. Laguera sits sixth nationally in the 10K, while Roberts is 14th.
The women this season have been guided by seniors Miriam Roberts (Boulder, Colo.) and Angelique Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.). Roberts owns an NCAA provisional time in the 5000m run (11th) and the 3000m steeplechase (13th), while Urenda has neared an NCAA mark in high jump and is coming off a win in the pole vault last week.
Roberts is scheduled to run the 800m and 1500m races, while Urenda has entered into the high jump, pole vault, 200m dash and will run with the 4x100m relay team.
Sophomore Gillian Maness (Kalispell, Mont.) will also run the 800m and 1500m and owns a provisional time in the 3000m steeplechase from her performance last week.
Jenna McKinley (So., Mosca, Colo.) finished third in both the shot and discus throws at the Spank Blasing Meet and will compete in both at CU.
