COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 16, 2018) - Colorado State University-Pueblo track and field sophomore Thomas Staines (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been recognized as the 2018 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, announced by the league office Wednesday. A total of 18 ThunderWolves from the men's and women's programs gathered 32 All-RMAC awards for the their efforts at the RMAC Outdoor Championships.
The major awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches following the completion of the RMAC Championship. First Team All-RMAC consists of the top three individual finishers from each event and the first-place relay teams from the championship meet. Second Team All-RMAC consists of the fourth, fifth and sixth-place individual finishers, along with the second-place relay teams.
Staines earns the 2018 sweep of the RMAC Track Athlete of the Year award, as he also earned the indoor honor. Twelve Pack men totaled 22 awards with nine athletes receiving All-RMAC First Team laurels. The No. 7 ThunderWolves produced four individual RMAC Champions with the 4x400m relay team also claiming the top honor. Staines was the champion in the 800m run with a meet record, while he also anchored the 4x400m squad to a meet record. Shawn Horne (So., Camp Casey, South Korea) won the 200m dash, Derrick Williams (Sr., Columbia Falls, Mont.) won the 1500m and Marcelo Laguera (Jr., Chihuahua, Mexico) was the champ in the 5000m run.
The women had two first team award winners in senior Angelique Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.) and junior Nikol Podlacha (USAF Academy, Colo.) in the high jump and discus, respectfully. In all, six athletes gathered 10 all-conference awards.
The Pack will be sending 11 student-athletes to the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set for May 24-26 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Eight members of the No. 7 men's team were selected, while three women will be competing.
National qualifier in the 800m and with the 4x400m relay team … RMAC Track Athlete of the Year ... RMAC Champion and All-RMAC First Team in the 800m and with the 4x400m relay team ... USTFCCCA All-Region in four events (400m, 800m, 1500m, 4x400m relay) … Converted 800m time of 1:47.55 in his run to the RMAC Championship was the best in NCAA Division II this outdoor season … His time was a meet record and new school record … Was fifth nationally with an automatic time in the 400m dash (46.19) and 12th in the division in the 1500m run (3:47.26) … Anchored the 4x400m relay team all season long and guided them to a time of 3:09.72 at the Bryan Clay Invitational to rank eighth nationally … Also a member of the 4x400m relay team that won the RMAC Championship and established a new meet record … USTFCCCA NCAA Division II National Athlete of the Week (May 1) … RMAC Track Athlete of the Week (April 2) ... Was the NCAA Indoor National Champion in the 800m.
