ThunderWolves suffer drubbing at hands of Mesa State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The ThunderWolves were unable to keep up with the Mavericks of Mesa State Friday, losing by 34 points, 96-62.

Mesa State jumped to a 9-0 run against the Thunderwolves to start the game and never looked back. The Pack had a bad night of shooting as they were roughed up by the duo of Kelsie Gourdin and Brittany Fowler.

Gourdin led the Lady Mavericks with 19 points while Fowler was right behind with 18 pts of her own.

"They shot it very well and we don't match up with their four and five positions," said head coach Kip Drown. "I tip my hat to them, they out played us."

The Thunderwolves were off on every aspect of their game. They shot just 12 percent from the free throw line in the first half and as a team shot 41 percent from the floor.

The Lady Mavericks had a very nice shooting night with 52.8 percent shooting from the floor and an even better 68.8 percent from behind the arc.

"You got to make plays. When you go to the foul line you got to make shots and if you have an open three you have to hit it," said Drown.

The leading scorer for the Lady Thunderwolves was Lindsay Black with 13 points and seven rebounds while Sarah Staggs had 12 points.

This was a big game for the Thunderwolves because it decided whether they will get a home playoff game or start the playoffs on the road.

"We didn't play very well. I am embarrassed and the kids are embarrassed," said Drown.

The Thunderwolves need to figure out this Mesa State team because more than likely they will have to face them in the first round at Mesa State.

The next game will be a handful as well for the Thunderwolves as they face the 8th ranked team in the country, Fort Lewis, in Durango.
