GRAND PRAIRIE, Tex. - The CSU-Pueblo wrestling team came away with two wins out of four duals at the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Tex. Saturday.
The ThunderWolves fell to sixth-ranked Central Oklahoma 35-10 as well as Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ranked 10th in the nation in NCAA Division III, by a 25-19 score, but scored wins over Newman (26-17) and NAIA foe, Oklahoma City (24-13).
The Pack led individually by Louie DeSantis (Jr., Escondido, Calif.), who was the only ThunderWolf wrestler to gain four wins Saturday. Coming as the Pack's win leader with 12 wins, he improved his mark to 16-6 by way of four slim decisions, including a one-point win over Oklahoma City's Will Shelton by a 7-6 mark, and a 6-3 win over Central Oklahoma's Luke Elmore, one of three victories the Pack claimed vs. Central Oklahoma. It was the second time this season DeSantis had defeated Elmore.
184-pounder Kellen Desmond (Jr., Escondido, Calif.) was also impressive, going 3-1, his only loss coming against Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Ben Engelland, the second-ranked 184-pounder in NCAA Division III. Desmond scored two four-point tech falls wins en route to his 3-1 mark on the day.
The Pack will look to build on the positive vibe of their 2-2 day at the Lone Star Duals as they open their conference schedule Wednesday at Massari Arena when they host Mesa State in the "Pack is Back" Night, presented by Pueblo Bank & Trust, in the first collegiate wrestling match in Pueblo since 2001. The Pack's dual begins at 7 p.m., immediately preceded by a high school match between Alamosa and Pueblo West.
