COLORADO SPRINGS - The ThunderWolves got their first dose of lowered expectations that come with being a first-year program, picked dead last in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's preseason wrestling poll, released Tuesday.
Out of 11 RMAC teams, the ThunderWolves were a unanimous pick for last place.
The ThunderWolves didn't get any representatives in the 10-member RMAC Preseason all-conference team, as well.
"There's only one way to go for us, and that's up," Pack wrestling coach Dax Charles said. "It's always easier to be at the bottom of the poll and attack your way up rather than be the top team and keep your standing."
The ThunderWolves' road to the top won't be easy - Three of the top five teams in the NCAA Division II Preseason wrestling poll, released by The NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Monday, are RMAC teams - defending national champion, Nebraska-Kearney (3rd), Adams State (4th), and Western State (5th). Chadron State (9th) is also ranked in the preseason top 25.
"It's a tough conference," Charles said, "and there are plenty of good teams to knock off before we can get to where we want to be."
The ThunderWolves' wrestling season begins Nov. 15 when the Pack travels to the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. for the Cowboy Open.
