ThunderWolves eke out one win at Grand Canyon Duals

Pack claims victory over Simon Fraser, but falls to fifth-ranked Grand Canyon and NCWA #1, California Baptist.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (GoThunderWolves.com - Jan. 7, 2012) - Facing some of the toughest competition they'll see all season long, the ThunderWolves had mixed returns at the Grand Canyon Duals Saturday, going 1-2 with its losses coming against elite teams Grand Canyon (Division II No. 5) and California Baptist (NCWA No. 1).

In its lone win, CSU-Pueblo outlasted NCWA entrant Simon Fraser 19-18.  The win came in dramatic fashion as 133-pounder Jesse Hillhouse (Jr., Casper, Wyo.), entering the mat with the Pack trailing 18-13, scored a pin of Skylor Davis 1:23 into the third period to lift the Pack past SFU.

Hillhouse was among the top-performing ThunderWolves over the three duals, going 2-1 in his matches, his only loss coming against the NCWA's sixth-ranked 133-pounder, Alexander Anunciation, in the dual against California Baptist.

The only ThunderWolf to go undefeated Saturday was Adam Carey (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.), who wrestled well in his native Phoenix, registering a technical fall win against California Baptist to go with a pair of decisions.

Other remarkable wins were turned in by Matt Addington (So., Florence, Colo.), who defeated the NCWA's ninth-ranked 165-pounder in California Baptist's Bronson Gerl in a 14-3 major decision, and Cody Johnson (Fr., Broken Arrow, Okla.), who downed the NCWA's sixth-ranked 197-pounder in California Baptist's David Dill by a pin at 5:45.

The ThunderWolves, now fully into its dual season, will travel to Gunnison, Colo. next weekend for the annual Tracy Borah Duals, which will give the Pack four opponents.
