ThunderWolves outlast Colorado Mesa
CSU-Pueblo claims first win over Mavericks since resurrecting program in 2008.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 2, 2012) - CSU-Pueblo took five of nine contested matches Thursday in a road dual at Colorado Mesa, taking down the Mavericks 23-18.
The ThunderWolves, seeking its first win over Colorado Mesa since the Pack resurrected its wrestling program in 2008, relied upon its strong lineup at the low weights to jump out to a 17-0 lead and all but bury the Mavericks and ice the dual.
After a forfeit to Tim Urenda (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) at 125 pounds gave the Pack a 6-0 lead, Jesse Hillhouse (Jr., Casper, Wyo.) won 2-0 at 133 pounds, claiming his eighth straight win in a 133-pound match in the process.
Nick Mamalis (Jr., Green River, Wyo.) claimed his first win at 141 pounds in impressive fashion, scoring an 18-2 technical fall of James Martinez to put the Pack up 14-0, while Nick Stahler (Jr., Palmer, Alaska) eked out a 5-4 decision over Trevor Donarski at 149 pounds, putting the Pack up 17-0.
The ThunderWolves' wins would be rounded out by a dramatic 4-2 overtime win by Matt Addington (So., Florence, Colo.) at 165 pounds and an 8-4 win at 174 pounds for Trevor Grant (So., Winnemucca, Nev.). For Grant, it was his ninth straight win, improving to 20-9.
CSU-Pueblo will try to go for a perfect week when it stays on the Western Slope, travelling to Gunnison, Colo. for a showdown with Western State.
