KEARNEY, Neb. (GoThunderWolves.com - Nov. 17, 2012) - Looking to test their strength against some of the top teams in the country, the CSU-Pueblo wrestling team traveled to Nebraska-Kearney for the Holiday Inn Open. Several Pack wrestlers made deep runs in the tournament highlighted by Ray Hall (Jr., Garfield, Ark.) who finished second.
Hall was impressive in the earlier rounds of the 174-pound elite division, securing a 8-5 decision over Brock Smith of the host team Nebraska-Kearney before squeezing out a 3-2 decision over Ethan Orr of Labette Community College.
The championship match was also very tightly contested with Hall falling to the number two ranked 174-pounder in the nation, Elliot Copeland of Western State, by a 3-2 decision. Last year, Copeland finished third in the nation.
In the 157-pound amateur bracket, John Lewis (Fr., Parker, Colo.) was able to secure a fourth place finish, going 3-1 in the tournament.
Lewis began the tournament with a deciding win by defeating Taylor Pownall of Chadron State with a 10-2 major decision. Lewis then pinned Zeke Nistrian at 3:57 in the second round before securing a 6-4 decision over Austin Starkey. Lewis' run would come to an end with a 6-1 loss to Jed Fenske to earn fourth place.
The Pack also had solid performances from freshmen Chris Frisbie (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo.) and Mike Miller (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.), who eached placed in their first tournaments, going fifth and sixth respectively.
The Pack will take a short hiatus before returning to action at the Cliff Keen Invitational. The tournament is scheduled for Nov. 30 in Las Vegas.
