PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Oct. 30, 2013) - The 2013-14 ThunderWolves wrestling squad was put on display Wednesday night as CSU-Pueblo showcase 14 matches in its annual Red/Blue Intrasquad Dual.
While the dual itself was tightly contested, ending in a 31-30 tiebreaker win for the Red Team after Red won eight matches to Blue's six, the real story was dominant performances put on by the Pack's expected breakout performers.
At 125 pounds, Eric Hughes (Jr., Bolivar, Mo.), a junior college All-American before joining the ThunderWolves this year, was dominant in claiming a pin of Adrian Manzo (Fr., Encino, Calif.) at 2:08 of the first period. It was one of six pins in 14 matches on the night.
Newcomer Chad Vandiver (Sr., Roscoe, Ill.), who arrived at CSU-Pueblo at the advanced wrestling age of 28 after wrestling for three seasons at Division I Northern Illinois, starting for the Huskies, was given two matches Wednesday to get back into the swing of things - and he passed with flying colors. Vandiver claimed pins in each of his matches, defeated John Ceplo (Fr., Pueblo West, Colo.) at 1:15 before closing the night with a pin of Cody Kirby (Fr., Byers, Colo.) at 2:22 to clear 12 points for the Blue Team all on his own.
CSU-Pueblo will now start its regular season this Saturday, traveling to Laramie, Wyo. for the annual Wyoming Cowboy Open.
