GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Feb. 8, 2014) – After jumping out to a 12-3 lead through three matches, the Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team lost the next four and then suffered a devastating pin in the 197-pound bout as the 13th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks withstood an upset bid in Saturday night Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling action, here in Brownson Arena.
Tim Urenda (So., Pueblo, Colo.) put the Pack up 6-0 as he pinned Mac Borrego in just 70 seconds at 125 pounds before another pin from Jimmy Chase (Jr., Hanover Park, Ill.) at 141 pounds gave the ThunderWolves a 12-3 lead.
However, CSU-Pueblo answered back with decisions at 149, 157, 165 and 174 pounds to take a 15-12 lead.
CSU-Pueblo's Augie DeSantis (So., Escondido, Calif.) then scored a tight 2-1 win at 184 pounds to tie the score at 15 before Paco Retana won his 197-pound match by pin to give the hosts a 21-15 lead after the penultimate match.
CSU-Pueblo's Niko Bogojevic (Jr., Superior, Wis.) would answer with a 3-2 win in the heavyweight match, but the victory was not enough in the overall dual, which went in CMU's favor, 21-18.
The ThunderWolves are now 3-8 and 1-4 in RMAC action heading into their final dual of the season on Wednesday (Feb. 12) at New Mexico Highlands.
