PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – May 1, 2014) — A pair of California Community College Athletic Association state placers and six high school state champions from five different states highlight a strong 2014-15 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling recruiting class that head coach Dax Charles and his staff have put together.
"Our 2014-15 recruiting class is all about high character wrestlers that will provide a solid foundation for being successful in the future," Charles said.
The class of 10 includes seven 2014 high school seniors and three transfers, including Hudson Buck and Allen Emmons, who both placed at the CCCAA championships in December helping the Sacramento City College Panthers to a state title.
Buck, who wrestled at 197 pounds, took second place after tying a state record by winning eight tournaments throughout his sophomore season, which in California is entirely in the fall. Emmons finished eighth at 184 pounds and won four regular season tournaments for the Panthers going into an injury-plagued post-season with a 28-1 record.
Both were also California High School State Qualifiers as seniors in 2011 while wrestling for Vacaville and Ponderosa High Schools, respectively. Buck also won the Reno Tournament of Champions title as a senior while Emmons was a league and section champion, who won 34 straight matches.
The ThunderWolves will also welcome in another transfer in former Colorado School of Mines standout Steven Kelly, who led the 2011-12 Oredigger squad with 22 wins while earning a No. 8 national ranking. The Parker native then finished sixth at the 2012 NCAA Super Region Four/RMAC Championships at 157 pounds.
Kelly, who will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Pack, was a 2-time state champion for the Ponderosa (Colo.) High School Mustangs prior to his 2010 high school graduation.
Meanwhile, the rest of the recruiting class includes high school state champions from Alaska, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, Texas, a state runner-up from Broomfield in Jarod Albo and a local standout in Pueblo Central product Keenan Wyatt.
Nathaniel McKimson, who hails from Wasilla, Alaska, was a 2-time state champion for the Wasilla Warriors and also placed second as a sophomore and fourth as a freshman earlier in his wrestling career. Slated to wrestle at 149 pounds for Charles, McKimson is also a 4-time freestyle state champion.
Stetson Loader, expected to wrestle at 125 pounds, earned a 2014 state title for the Walsh (Colo.) Eagles and was a 4-time state-placer. He hails from Two Buttes, Colorado.
Gage Currier will join the Pack program from Colstrip, Montana and is the nephew of Pack assistant coach and Hall of Famer Chris Currier. He was a 3-time divisional and state champion for his father Codey's Colstrip Colt squad and place fifth at the senior nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was also named as the most outstanding wrestler at the 2013 Cowboy Invitational and was the Montana Triple Crown Winner winning AAU Folkstyle, USA Freestyle and Greco State Championships four times a piece.
He is slated to compete at 125 or 133 pounds for the ThunderWolves.
Joining the Pack from the Cornhusker state will be JaCobi Jones, who won the 170-pound Nebraska Class A title for the Omaha North Vikings this year, capping what was a 46-5 season. He also helped the Vikings win a team title in both wrestling and football. He is slated to wrestle at 165 pounds for the Pack.
Meanwhile, Beau Henson was a 2-time state champion for the Randall Raiders of Amarillo, Texas, just north of his hometown of Canyon. He was also a high school All-American and will battle Buck and Emmons for time at 184 or 197 pounds.
Albo, who is slated to wrestle at 165 pounds, placed second at the 2014 state tournament for the Broomfield Eagles after placing fifth as a junior in 2013.
Wyatt, who finished fourth at the 4A Colorado State Champions for the Pueblo Central Wildcats posted a 42-6 senior record and went 114-27 over his last three seasons with the Justin Morris coached squad. He is expected to compete at 149 pounds.
The ThunderWolves will have to replace a pair of graduating NCAA Division II All-Americans in Ray Hall (Oak Park, Mo.) and Trevor Grant (Winnemucca, Nev.), who led the team to a fifth place finish at the NCAA West Region/RMAC Championships and a second straight top-25 finish (23rd) at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
