PUEBLO, Colo. (February 27, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team will have five student-athletes battling for the opportunity to qualify for the national tournament Saturday in the NCAA Division II Wrestling West Super Regional. The ThunderWolves rank eighth overall (46 points), but sit just 1.5 points out of fifth.
All five wrestlers that are still competing are on the consolation side of the bracket. Freshman 165 JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) and senior heavyweight Niko Bogojevic (Superior, Wis.) each lost their semifinal match of the championshop bracket. Senior 133 Eric Hughes (Bolivar, Mo.) and junior 141 Tim Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.) each won their first match before falling in the next round. Urenda went 3-1 on the day, while Hughes went 2-1. Sophomore 174 Steven Ullman (Arvada, Colo.) lost his first match, but battled to win three straight and stay alive in the tournament.
125 – Alex Baca (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) won his first match of the day by recording just his first pin of the season at 4:43. Unfortunately he was pinned in the next two matches and finished the day 1-2. Baca finished the season 6-13.
133 – Eric Hughes (Sr., Bolivar, Mo.) had a bye the first round, but lost his first match of the day on a first-period sudden victory, 6-4. Hughes took out his frustrations of the close loss by posting major victories in his next two matches, 16-5 and 15-6, to reach the consolation semifinals.
141 – Tim Urenda (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) won his first match with a first period takedown and riding out his opponent the rest of the match, a 3-0 decision. He suffered a 7-4 loss, but rebounded with a 14-6 major decision on the consolation side of the bracket. He moved to 3-1 on the day and advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3 decision.
149 Dillon Karajanis (Sr., Cheyenne, Wyo.) went 0-2 Friday (7-5 and fall 3:47) to end his senior season 20-15.
157 – Steven Kelly (So., Parker, Colo.) posted a 2-2 record Friday. He lost his first match of the day by a 3-2 decision, but won his next by a third period fall. Kelly was on the winning end of a close battle, 11-9, to move on to the consolation quarters. He suffered a 6-0 loss in the match and finished the season 18-19.
165 – JaCobi Jones (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and used a bye and a 6-3 decision to reach the championship semifinals. He was pinned for just the second time this season to go 1-1 on the day and will battle in the consolation semifinals Saturday.
174 – Steven Ullman (So., Arvada, Colo.) lost a 9-6 decision in round one, but the sophomore won three straight matches to stay in the hunt to become a national qualifier. A fall at 4:54 moved him along the consolation bracket, then back-to-back 7-6 decisions pushed him to the semifinals. We went 3-1 on the day, guided by a late third period takedown in the quarterfinal bout.
184 – Riley Argyle (Sr., Jerome, Idaho) drew the top seed in his bracket for the first round and lost by fall at 4:25. He used a 2:13 fall to stay in the tournament, but a 4-2 loss ended his senior season with an 8-13 record.
197 – Anthony Ball (So., Vista, Calif.) suffered a technical fall loss (16-0) before losing an 8-3 decision and ended the season 9-17.
HWT – Niko Bogojevic (Sr., Superior, Wis.) needed just 36 seconds to move on from the first round, then pinned his next opponent in the second round, 4:27. He lost a close match, a 5-3 decision, in the championship semifinals and will attempt to make nationals Saturday on the consolation side of the bracket.
