COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 1, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team landed five student-athletes on the Academic All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Team Tuesday, guided by Academic All-RMAC First Team member junior Alex Baca (125, Pueblo, Colo.).
Baca owns a 3.74 GPA in sociology. He went 6-13 overall this season and earned the starting spot at 125. Baca was also named National Collegiate Wrestling Association Division II All-Academic Honorable Mention this season to help guide the Pack to a team finish of 16th nationally.
Four other Pack wrestlers were named to the Academic All-RMAC Honor Roll.
Senior Matt Addington (Florence, Colo.) – 3.67 Business Administration
Freshman Sam Hughes (Bolivar, Mo.) – 3.33 Recreation
Junior Larry Schmueser (Rifle, Colo.) – 3.75 Construction Management
Freshman Phil Young (Casper, Wyo.) – 3.43 Sociology
To qualify for Academic All-RMAC, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.30 or better, be a starter or reserve, and have completed two consecutive semesters or three quarters at their current institution. The student-athlete's cumulative GPA is what they have earned after the fall semester. RMAC Sports Information Directors at schools which sponsor the sport of wrestling selected the first team.
The CSU-Pueblo wrestling team sent three student-athletes to the NCAA Tournament this year and finished tied for 26th, which was tied for third among RMAC teams. The Pack hosted the 2015 NCAA West Super Regional and finished sixth of 14 teams, third out of their RMAC counterparts. The ThunderWolves posted an 8-9 overall record in dual matches, which included a 3-4 conference mark.
As a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Colorado State University – Pueblo competes in 22 varsity sports in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics.
