CSU-Pueblo mourns the loss of Pack wrestler Steven Kelly





PUEBLO, Colo. (June 23, 2015) – With great sorrow, Colorado State University-Pueblo mourns the death of wrestling student-athlete Steven Kelly, who passed away June 21.

Steven, who passed away June 21 in a tubing accident on the Arkansas River in Pueblo, was a junior engineering major with a mechatronics specialization from Parker, Colorado.

"This is a devastating loss to CSU-Pueblo and the Pack wrestling program," said CSU-Pueblo Director of Athletics Joe Folda. "Steven was an outstanding student-athlete with a bright future. Our prayers go out to his family and friends during this time of grief." 

"Steven Kelly was a Christian student-athlete who had high moral character," said CSU-Pueblo Head Wrestling Coach Dax Charles. "He influenced many at CSU-Pueblo and in Colorado and will be missed. Steven was known for his strong work ethic and awesome attitude, which affected many who came to know him. We send our condolences to the Kelly family and hope as a team we can demonstrate Steven's never-quit attitude." 

Steven transferred to CSU-Pueblo in 2014 and as a sophomore found his way to the top of the 157 weight class for the ThunderWolves. He compiled a 16-17 overall record and two falls. In 16 dual matches Steven went 7-9 (one pin), which included a 3-4 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals. He ranked tied for fourth on the team in takedowns with 32. Steven finished fifth at the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open (Nov. 22).

As a redshirt freshman in 2011-12, Steven led Colorado School of Mines in wins with a 22-12 record and earned a No. 8 national ranking. 

He was a two-time state and four-time regional champion at Ponderosa High School.

He was the son of Dan and Lisa Kelly. He was 23.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2015, 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Ponderosa Valley Funeral Services, with Celebration of Life Service on Monday, June 29, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Southeast Christian Church in Parker. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
