HAYS, Kan. (December 7, 2015) - Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestler Kyle Bateman (So., Sandy, Ore.) was a perfect 5-0 Sunday including an 11-3 major decision victory in the 165-pound championship match at the Bob Smith Open in Hays, Kansas.
Bateman defeated Daniel Carillo of Central Oklahoma securing his first tournament win of the season.
Bateman opened his journey to the ship with a 6-4 win his first match of the day. His five matches included a first round pin (2:45) in the semifinals round.
At 125-pounds, AJ Salazar (R-Jr., Leadville, Colo.) finished with a 4-2 record. Salazar rebounded following an first match loss to win four in a row battling through the consolation bracket.
Salazar recorded two tech falls and one major and a 10-3 decision before falling 7-5 in overtime to Robert Ozuna of York (Neb.) College.
Sam Hughes (R-So., Bolivar, Mo.) picked up three victories in the 133-pound bracket which included two tech falls.
CSU-Pueblo next will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec. 20 in Reno, Nevada.
