Four duals on docket for Pack Wrestling Saturday


PUEBLO, Colo. (January 13, 2016) - The No. 21 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team will compete at the 5th Annual Midwest Duals, hosted by University of Nebraska-Kearney, Saturday, Jan. 14. The ThunderWolves are slated to go to battle in four duals beginning at 8 a.m. MST.

The event is being held at the Health & Sports Center and Cushing Coliseum in Kearney, Nebraska. A total of 74 college (NCAA Division II, NAIA and JUCO), high school and youth teams, representing 13 different U.S. states, will compete on 18 mats in Cushing and the H & S Center between Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, the action will include 20 Division II schools.

The ThunderWolves will face Southwest Minnesota State University at 8 a.m. MST. SMSU is ranked 14th in Super Region Three. At 9:30 a.m. MST, the Pack face Northern State University, which ranks No. 7 nationally and No. 5 in Super Region Three. The Wolves have five wrestlers ranked in the top 10 nationally.

CSU-Pueblo will face their third member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at 11 a.m., as it hits the mat with Augustana College. The Vikings are tied for 18th nationally and are No. 6 in their region. Augie comes in with two wrestlers ranked nationally. Finally, the Pack will battle Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-foe Cal-Baptist University at 12:30 p.m. The Lancers are No. 12 in the latest nationall rankings and are fourth (one spot ahead of the Pack) in Super Region Four. Cal-Baptist has three wrestlers ranked nationally.

The ThunderWolves enter the weekend with two wrestlers in the top 12 of NCAA Division II. Junior JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) sits No. 3 at 165. He owns a 4-3 record with three pinfalls. Redshirt-Sophomore Kyle Fantin (Crave Creek, Ariz.) ranks No. 11 at 149 with a 12-6 record this season.

Fantin went 3-0 at the NWCA National Duals last week to help guide the Pack to a fourth-place finish. The tournament featured nine of the top 11 nationally ranked programs in NCAA Division II. The Pack recorded wins against No. 2 Notre Dame (Ohio) and No. 6 Mercyhurst University.

Following the dual weekend, the ThunderWolves will open their home dual schedule with RMAC-rival Colorado Mesa University, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.


As a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Colorado State University – Pueblo competes in 22 varsity sports in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics.
