COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (January 24, 2017) - Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling's JaVaughn Perkins (R-Fr., Omaha, Neb.) was recognized as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday, in a release from the league office.
The award is the first of the year for No. 13 Pack Wrestling and the first of Perkins' young career.
Perkins went 3-0 at 184 in the last week to guide the ThunderWolves to a 2-1 record. The redshirt-freshman didn't allow a takedown in the three bouts and recorded a pin in just 19 seconds.
He started with an 8-5 decision against Colorado Mesa University's Ausin Gaun (ranked No. 4 in the region) to help the Pack defeat the Mavericks 25-6. The 19 second pin came against New Mexico Highlands University to help CSU-Pueblo win 31-6. The team loss came to No. 9 and undefeated University of Central Oklahoma 22-12, but three of those points were earned by Perkins, who won 7-2.
On the week he totaled four takedowns, a pair of two-point nearfalls and a reversal. Perkins ranks No. 6 nationally and No. 2 in Super Region Four.
CSU-Pueblo returns to the mat Thursday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Western State Colorado University for an RMAC dual beginning at 7 p.m.
