FORT WAYNE, Ind. (January 5, 2018) - The No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team finished eighth at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals after losing twice Friday to a pair of top 10 teams. Senior JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) finished 5-0 at 165.
Jones recorded the lone decision win (6-3) in the 30-9 loss to No. 8 Notre Dame (Ohio) in the first bout of the day. The other six points came from a forfeit.
In the seventh place match against No. 10 Upper Iowa University, the ThunderWolves forfeited the 174 and 184 bouts to give the Peacocks 12 points. The final score of the match was 26-15. Senior Jared Mestas (Pueblo, Colo.) won at 141 by a 7-1 decision, then the Pack gathered back-to-back victories at 157 and 165. Kyle Fantin (R-Sr., Cave Creek, Ariz.) posted a 6-3 decision victory at 157 then Jones won 9-4. Entering the two forfeited weight classes, the ThunderWolves trailed 10-9. Senior heavyweight Cody Johnson (Broken Arrow, Kan.) capped the bout and the tournament with a first period pin at 1:22 to collect his second pinfall of the week - the only two falls for the Pack at the National Duals.
CSU-Pueblo finished eighth among the 16 teams where nine of the top 10 programs nationally were participating. Next are the Midwest Duals Jan. 13 hosted by University of Nebraska-Kearney. The ThunderWolves will have four bouts that day, starting with San Francisco State University at 8 a.m. MST.
