PHOENIX, Ariz. (GoThunderWolves.com - Sep. 8, 2012) - The CSU-Pueblo women's soccer team looked to be off to a fast start after scoring the first two goals in their final non-conference game of the season against Dixie State. The Red Storm would bounce back though adding two goals to force a tie.
The Pack looked to be in control early capitalizing on their opportunities and turning them into goals. Maya Rugg (Jr., Eagar, Ariz.) was brilliant in her return to her home state of Arizona, giving the team quality minutes as a reserve and scoring the first goal of the game.
Rugg received a long pass from Tamra Nee (Jr., Honolulu, HI.) using her speed to break past the defense before tucking the ball away in a one versus one with the goalkeeper to give the Pack a 1-0 lead they would take into halftime.
The always dangerous Alicia Irwin (Jr., North Richland Hills, Texas) would tally her first goal of the season three minutes into the second half on a combination play with Brittany Kliesen (So., Pueblo, Colo.). Kliesen was magnificent in beating a defender on the right side before sending a ball to Irwin, who finished the job.
But just as it seemed the Pack might run away with the game, the Red Storm would respond with a goal from Kristin Page.
Dixie State would use their newly gained momentum and add the equalizer just three minutes later with a goal from Jennifer Mason.
Defensively the Pack did a solid job of limiting the Red Storms opportunities aside from the two goals. Dixie State rarely got clean looks at the goal and their chances were usually taken with a defender nearby.
The Pack had a great opportunity to win the game in double overtime when a hand ball was called against Dixie State just outside the 18-yard box. The free kick found Avila Garcia (Bosque Farms, N.M.) who headed the ball just wide of the goal to end the threat.
CSU-Pueblo returns home to open the conference season when they host Colorado School of Mines Friday at 7 p.m.
