Pack ties for sixth at RMAC as several records fall
Pack nets three qualifiers for nationals and two school records at RMAC Championships.
KEARNEY, Neb. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 26, 2011) - Four ThunderWolves qualified provisionally for nationals and two school records were set Saturday at the RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Kearney, Neb., as CSU-Pueblo finished tied for 6th.
Blair Gilkes (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) finished fourth in the 60-meter with a 7.70 sprint in the finals, but finished second in the 200-meter with a 25.28, just a smidge off her personal best of 25.09. Both marks were provisional qualifying marks.
Danita Wyatt (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) turned in perhaps the best all-around performance of any ThunderWolf, setting a school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 11-1/2 inches, besting her previous school record by four inches. But she was even more impressive in the triple jump, finishing second overall with a 38-feet, 3/4 inch jump that provisionally qualified her to nationals.
CSU-Pueblo also got a school-record time in the 4x400-meter relay, as the foursome of Leanne Carberry (Sr., Idledale, Colo.), Shilay Willis (Fr., Aurora, Colo.), Jazmin Evans (So., Parker, Colo.) and Sierra Jones (Jr., Denver, Colo.) combined to turn in a 4:02.33 time in the event, good enough for a fourth-place finish and busting a year-old record.
The track squad now awaits news on the status of Gilkes' and Wyatt's bids for nationals, as all their quals were made on a provisional basis. After all automatic qualifiers are given a space in nationals, only the top provisional marks will provide for a trip to nationals.
