ThunderWolves suffer setback at Rockhurst Classic

ThunderWolves finish 1-3 at season-opening tournament.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ( - Sept. 3, 2011) - The positive steps taken by the ThunderWolves volleyball squad on Friday at the Rockhurst classic were turned on their head Saturday as the Pack went 0-2, closing the tournament with a less-than-stellar 1-3 mark.

The ThunderWolves had the second-least wins of the six teams at the Rockhurst Classic.

In the opening game against William Jewell (Mo.), a provisional Division II member moving up from NAIA, the ThunderWolves lost a heartbreaker in five sets, watching as a fifth set in which they led by as much as three get away in the end, losing 16-14 in that final set.  Overall, the ThunderWolves fell 27-29, 10-25, 25-17, 25-16, 14-16.

Against host Rockhurst in the tournament finale, CSU-Pueblo was simply beaten by the Hawks, only dominating in one set and losing 16-25, 21-25, 25-16, 17-25.

The frustrating thing about both losses Saturday as well as all three losses suffered by the Pack at the Rockhurst Classic - CSU-Pueblo outhit its opponent in each match.

Bernadette Pitre (Sr., Clifton, Colo.) was strong in both matches, however, hitting .303 and .524 against William Jewell and Rockhurst, respectively, good enough for her to get All-Rockhurst Classic honors.  She was the only ThunderWolf named to the eight-member squad.

The ThunderWolves will get in another four matches next weekend at the Dallas Baptist Lady Patriot Classic, taking place on Sept. 9 and 10 in Dallas.
