Pack volleyball falls to Western New Mexico

Pueblo, Colo. ( - Oct. 5, 2013) - The CSU-Pueblo volleyball squad dropped a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match 25-21, 18-25, 13-25, 00-25 to Western New Mexico Saturday night.

The ThunderWolves dropped to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in RMAC play after the loss, despite gritty performances by leaders Brianna Bryant (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Morgan Wilkening (So., Fleming, Colo.)

Bryant and Wilkening contributed eight kills each in the four-set loss, which halted the ThunderWolves two match win streak.

The first set looked promising for the T-Wolves, and was highlighted by the play of setter Kacy Griffin (Sr., San Antonio, Texas), who contributed two kills to go with eight assists and five digs in the 25-21 set that gave the Pack a 1-0 advantage.

Coach Jen Gomez pushed the team to have a sense of urgency in the second set, as the pack fell into a 10-3 hole early before ultimately falling 18-25, which evened the match at one set a piece.

Unfortunately for the ThunderWolves, that urgency never equated to efficiency, as they dropped the third set 13-25 after allowing the Mustangs of Western New Mexico to hit .303 as a team.

In the fourth set, the two RMAC squads went back-and-forth before the Mustangs offense took a five-point lead that the ThunderWolves simply could not overcome.

The ThunderWolves had won five of their previous six matches and boasted a .500 record for the first time all season before suffering their second conference loss on Saturday.

Next up for the Pack is back-to-back home matches against Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian on October 10 and 11, with both matches scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
